About the story:

Fake Out is the first in the Long Beach Mysteries set on the west coast of Vancouver Island (1968 to 1973) when the Pacific Rim National Park was being developed and will follow fictional staff working at, and living near, the original Wickaninnish Inn, built on Long Beach in 1964.

The story is told from four points of view, the first being Sandy, a twenty-year-old university drop-out searching for the freedom portrayed by the hippie culture. The other three are: Conny, a twenty-two-year-old supervisor of the cleaning staff at the inn, trying to earn enough to move to Hollywood where she hopes to be discovered; Tom, a twenty-one-year-old rich kid from West Vancouver sent to the inn to work off the embarrassment he’d caused his father; and David, a thirty-nine-year-old RCMP corporal, of Ucluelet detachment, wanting to settle his family in an area he views as a paradise.

When the brutality of murder enters their lives, they are forced to examine assumptions they’ve made about themselves.

Reviews:

“You can feel the heat of summer and almost smell the smoke of drugs … The build up to a tense and exciting ending was palpable. … Bayko has certainly created a worthy mystery with a captivating setting.” ─ The British Columbia Review

“Bayko has an ear for dialogue … that captures the era’s fascinating generational friction … but it’s the sensory immersion in the fog, surf, and danger creeping in that will have readers wanting to return to this beach.” “OUR VERDICT: GET IT” ─ Kirkus Reviews

“It’s an absolute brilliant read. Love the little raunchy bits to. So far, I think my favourite character is Conny, I think her character is relevant in any era. And for me, the setting and the Inn and the coast, personally it takes me right back to the Island.” ─ Nicola, Ireland

“What I like about Faye’s book is her descriptions of the environment create such a vivid picture you can just feel the forest around you, hear the ocean, and feel the night air. Makes the world the characters move through very personal. … When you consider what our generation and the surfer culture was like in 1968, Faye really nailed it.” ─ John, Calgary
